U-19 v. Provo / 107-0

Highland’s U19’s took on first-year Provo in a game which was rescheduled one day later than originally scheduled. The game took place at Murray Rugby Stadium, under beautiful conditions. Highland started off quickly, with Highland putting in a try in the first minute. Provo, who was well-coached and had some success against us in the lineout early with some creative movement, couldn’t really manage to sustain anything over more than a phase or two. Standouts on the day included wing Josh Anderson, who raced to a hat trick of tries which included a nice pickup off of a kick ahead, scrumhalf Sean Harwood, and #10 Danny Tuai in the backs. In the forwards, the front row of DJ Ferris, Levi Card, and Moises Peraza all ran and rucked hard, and break Ara Elkington was like an 8th back in open play. The boys did some much-needed conditioning on the field following the game, showing a refusal to be satisfied with the status quo and realizing that just being happy with the 107-0 victory is not enough – we must continue to get better.

The Black Planet hit by three meteorites (losses) today

The Highland Sophomore team was beaten by the United Sophomore team 37 to 32. A tough and very good game.

The Highland Varsity team was beaten by the Snow Canyon Warriors (St George) single school team 11 to 7 in Salt Lake.

And DC Rugby beat the Highland Sophomore A squad for the second time this season 17 - 7. Three weeks ago DC Rugby beat the same squad 42-17.

Highland showing they are like the rest of the teams in the league. Can be beaten on any given Saturday.

The 100+ to zero scores are sad anomalies of first year teams playing Highlands U-19 juggernaut. There is no meaningful or positive purpose to these games other than the 100-0 scores look pretty in the win column.The BIG W! It destroys the spirit and will of the other players, all new to the game.

Why do we allow this to continue?

Since Highland decimated Dixie 107-0 the team has been reduced to 9 players and may not make it through the season.

Who's conscience is bothered by this policy and practice? How do you sleep at night?

U-19 v. Dixie

Highlights: The game was over pretty quick against Dixie, who played hard all game but is a first year team with a lot of green players. Tries came early and often by our boys, who had go-forward all day long. It is still early season, so we are playing with some different lineups and seeing who we have where. All 15 starters were pulled at halftime of a runaway game, and although the bench was emptied, there was not much drop off from the starters to the reserves in a 101-0 victory. Great play by John Kacinski, Levi Card, Maika Hafoka, Dion Stevens, Eric Pauni, and Brigham Tukukino, among many others.

Lowlights: Placekicking is still inconsistent, and we need to continue to find a comfort level with each other and function as one…but there were great improvements there form last week.

United Haka

Great high school tournament in St George, Utah

Skyline, Lowland, Springville, Mesa, United, Snow Canyon HS, Dixie and Hurricane fielded teams for 2 days of pre season rugby in sunny St George. This annual event is growing.

The highlight for me was watching the mixed team match between United and Springville. Players from both teams exchanged jerseys to create two evenly matched teams. It was a very competitive game and I don't believe anyone kept score. Players from both teams on each side.

I don't believe I have ever seen young men have so much fun. It was a thrill to watch.

The generally newer and less experienced players from Springville had a blast playing side by side with the more experienced United players. This was about having fun, learning and building the brotherhood of rugby.

Hats off to both coaches the players and the organizers of the tournament.We need much much more of this.

US high school rugby stars for NZ side

Salim Lancaster and Alex Pettiford are from Washington DC's Hyde Leadership Public Charter School which has been on front pages of American newspapers and in sports channels as the first US all-African-American high school rugby team.

Hyde's "The Pride" rugby side has developed a close relationship with the New Zealand Embassy in Washington which holds the annual Ambassador Shield match on the school grounds, raising US$10,000-$15,000.

Tal Bayer, Hyde-DC's head rugby coach and director of development, told Stuff.co.nz that Salim and Alex are "awesome rugby athletes and honour roll students...

"They were chosen unanimously by their teammates and coaches for this scholarship programme."

In addition to attending classes, the students will have opportunities to train with the Auckland Rugby Academy and will see several professional and college teams play rugby.

Greetings from the UK, after watching the DVD "Forever Strong" last night (which I had to buy from Australia) I was so moved. Trying to find if I could but some merchandise and support the effort I came across your website and I feel now so sad.

In the UK we have had differences over the years between the two codes of Rugby, League which I was born into being a northern based town and Union, which I also loved, but still do not feel is a fluent in rugby style. But! the divisions were always between those that rule and never between those that play the game.

My career was brought to an halt very early due to injury, when I so wanted to make it professional. Being a firm and committed Christian I Prayed and for some reason was guided to the YMCA were rugby had not bene played for over 40 years and with a friend we stated an Under 16 team, to carry out our beliefs and work with young guys we adopted a motto from St John, "That They All May Be One" over many years we helped so many young men, many could never work out why I was always Happy and never drank or smoked, we even moved up to having an Under 17 team as well.

Then in Prayer I was called to serve as a County/State Youth Selector and quickly to a Great Britain Youth Selector. I did not want to leave my club team but Prayer told me different.

For Great Britain there were 4 selectors, all were aged over 50 and I was 23. It came for a Tour to Australia and the four of us had to decide who should go. The GB Coach had put in a recommendation for myself as all the players knew and respected me, but when the votes were cast, I got none! - I then made the biggest mistake of my life, I never put this to problem, I walked away with my ball as they say.

Now I know that was not what "My Heavenly Father! wanted.

I hope understanding can come again quickly, this was a movie, most American Movies tell us you won the second world war on your own - LOL - but on this poignant D Day weekend we all know that was not True and most of my best friends are American.

Email sent to the Pacific Coast Rugby Union

A few weeks ago I watched my son’s mens division team, The Las Vegas Blackjacks, play the Sacramento Lions. To add some perspective, I am a Maori / Samoan from New Zealand. These men represented you very well. In fact it was the most remarkable display of good sportsmanship and self discipline that I have ever seen at a rugby game especially in light of what happened after the game.

During the game their were some very big hits, particularly on the Sacramento side of the ball. Hard tackling but guys were wrapping up and no one was hurt. The play was hard but clean. I saw not fists flying or stomping. Hats off to the Referee he did an excellent job. These are not easy games to ref. He showed respect for the players and the calls were fair both ways, and in return he received respect from the players. The Lions lost a hard fought game but they were gracious and gentlemen in defeat even wishing Las Vegas the best in Texas.

After the game as the Lions returned to their side of the field, some of the players wandered across an adjoining field where a game of flag football was being played. Words were exchanged #%T&^$##%%^% and then some pushing and shoving started. I stood their thinking to myself, you crazy crazy flag football players, you have no idea what type of hornets nest you are messing with. You do not get into a Polynesians face after he lost a rugby game and with all of his team mates only 20 feet away.

Then I heard the voice of the coach calling to his players to let it go and come back over to sit under the tree. F&B’s still flying, players pulling other players away and then they turned and WALKED AWAY, listened to the coach and gathered with the rest of the team under the tree.

I was so proud and pleased with their conduct. These men turned a potentially very ugly situation into a lesson that needs to be shared with everyone. I later shed a few tears for my Polynesian brothers who are so often stereotyped and marginalized because of their appearance. Big guys with big hair, big tattoos and the too often overlooked big hearts. We hear too much of the negative and not enough of the positive. We are often blinded by the outward appearance and fail to see the good that lies within or recognize and praise good conduct.

On this day these warriors walked away with a victory on and off the field. They did your union, club, coaches, supporters, families, community, parents, ancestors, cultures and each other PROUD. Damn proud. A huge credit to their program and coaches and a great example for all of us to follow. These Lions were Kings of the day!!

And the flag football players should be counting their lucky stars.

Moving Forward

My brother Colin said, would it not be awesome to see a representative team made up of players from both United and Highland. I agree this would be terrific. My Apologies

I apologize if my efforts to shine a light on these issues over the years has added fuel to the fires of disrespect and unkindness as exhibited by both Highland and United players and supporters at Rio Tinto. This was not my intent and I will do my part to end this. I have tried reaching out in various ways to HR to create a positive forum but without success.

At some point in the future each of us will stand before the Almighty, to make an accounting of our actions, words and intent related to all of these issues. I look forward to that day and leave it all in his hands.

Call from my brother

My brother Colin, the coach of the United Rugby Club called me. We had a long talk about what we could to create a positive and inclusive environment for the future growth of rugby in Utah. Both of us were very concerned and saddened about what happened after the game at Rio Tinto. The swearing, cussing and name calling between players and supporters of both teams. A very very bad spirit at the end of the game and not a nice scene for the hosts at Rio Tinto, or families to witness. I agree with Colin it is time for a change.

The Key to Respect

Gratitude and acknowledging the contribution of others is the key to respect। Being able to say, I did not do all of this on my own. This has only been possible by the grace of God and with the help and support of countless parents and young men. The 397 wins and 18 championships could not have been accomplished, if not for the invaluable contribution, skills and willingness of the young men from New Zealand to come to Utah and play for HR. A truce proposal for HR

Would someone in the HR inner circle be willing to engage in an honest conversation as Jenny and I attempted a few weeks ago.

Would HR be willing to donate $3.00 from every DVD sold and 10% of the ticket receipts from Forever Strong to a scholarship fund in New Zealand, that went to help young Maori students? Consider this a form of payback or an expression of gratitude without having to reveal all of the unpleasant details. A win win for all. What say ye HR?? We can discuss the details privately.

Congratulations. The best team today was Highland. Great game! The local HR boys stepped up and made the difference. No need for the 4th import player.

D-Day 24 hours and counting

United verses Highland at The Rio Tinto Stadium. The playing field is level with import players on both sides. Now the local players and coaching will truly determine the outcome of the game. Good luck to all and may the best team be victorious. I will post the score tomorrow.

HR cancels game against Kearns

Several weeks ago the Union scheduled a regular season mid week game between HR and Kearns. HR canceled the game saying they needed at least seven days between games to prepare for a tough team like Kearns. This is not Wimbledon or the World Series. If it's good enough for the other teams to follow the schedule then here is an item for the HR, how do we earn the respect of the other teams list.

This should be a forfeit and a loss for HR. Kearns is a great program with committed players, coaches and parents. They deserve more respect than to be dismissed by a made up 7 day preparation rule. I am sure they would prefer to play HR than take a win by default. The union should not have to bend the schedule around HR's extracurricular and traveling games during the regular season. Fall in line, follow the schedule and sow the seeds to respect.

Eleventh hour recruit

HR player / member ID # 447838 arrives in Utah on the 29th of April but CIPP registered on the 14th of April.

Update: Did not arrive in Utah because his mother is not well. I hope his mother recovers quickly.

HR record without the Kiwi Connection

239 wins to 149 losses / 8 National Championships. Maybe not Hollywood material but still a great team. No less of an environment for character building and the noble pursuits of all great teams. A more fertile environment because losing helps to set the plow deep and turn the soil of change and innovation.

Unfortunately .................

Unfortunately our friends at HR are not responding to recent questions about the end of the season recruit from Australia and Uniteds offer to limit the import players to three on the field at any one time. I was hopeful that we were establishing a connection and mutually respectful line of communication with Jenny and Tim.

This is a good example of how, over the years, the inner circle at HR has done a very good job of keeping the details about their recruiting efforts and use of the Utah Public School system under the radar. Even keeping their own loyal supporters, like Jenny and Tim in the dark. Tim adamantly denies such activity so late in the season. It's not his fault, he is only passing on what he is told. Perhaps this news of these eleventh hour recruiting efforts, such as calls to Mr Harris in New Zealand, have caught Jenny and Tim off guard.

What is going on? My opinion. HR had six imports last year. Other Utah teams had zero. With the recent U-19 rule changes the field has been leveled. HR now needs to have more confidence in their local players. They are hard workers and good young men. Put your faith and confidence in them and they will surprise you. The days of the blow out scores are gone and you may lose a few games now and then, and that's ok.

Deep character transformation, Kia Kaha warrior type character, comes only by trail and tribulation or losing on occasion, not by winning every single game. It is only at these moments when a team discovers or exposes its weaknesses to itself. Then a plan can be crafted to mold those weaknesses into strengths. Growth and change without losing is a myth. Losing every time with honor and giving your best efforts is a victory and an indication of great courage and persistence. Is winning to much and to easily HR's refiners fire?

All of the other Utah teams have been in the heat of the refiners fire for years. Skyline, Kearns, United, Davis, Murray, Park City etc. They are now slowly emerging much the better, stronger, confident, united, focused and fearless.

United agrees to the limit of 3 import players on the field at any one time.

Will HR agree as well? This is a win win for every team, those with import players and those without. If a team wants to bring over five, six, seven or more players from other countries, they can do that. But only three on the field at any one time. A fair and equitable compromise for all.

Congrats to Skyline Rugby

Highland 57...Skyline 5. A remarkable feat in light of past scores soaring into the 40's, 50's, 60's etc. It requires heaps of courage to step onto the field to play a team that beat you by 60 points the last time you played. Kudos to committed and passionate coaches, parents and players. Kia Kaha!! This was with no import players.

End of the season recruiting continues

Sorry Jenny, your sources at HR are not giving you the complete scoop. Your getting a small taste of we have put up with for many years.

The season is winding down, as in only TWO WEEKS remaining, and HR has just recruited another import player from Australia. Total is now 4 import players, maybe 5 or 6 by next week. HR asked their contacts in Hamilton to send two more players, but they were unable to oblige. So across the Tasman Sea they went to Australia. Highly unusual strategy so late in the season.

Unfortunately good intentioned people like Jenny continue to be used to spread misinformation. Jenny, I checked with United as I told you I would, and they will agree to the limit of no more than three import players on the field at any one time. Will HR do the same?????? We look forward to your response.

Unusual scoring celebration

In an effort to offer HR some ideas to help improve their cool, as in not very social, relationship with other teams, I offer the following for their consideration. The HR practice of a team huddle after every score and clapping while reciting "HR Rugby" is singularly unique in all of sports. Why? It is perceived as show boating, celebrating, not in good taste and unsportsmanlike. Imagine the reaction if a basketball or football team huddled after each score, clapped and said "go South High go" as they ran back to the other side of the field or court. It is a practice found no where in the rugby world or in any sport, for a reason.

Performing the Haka on the sidelines during a game or even after a game is inappropriate and disrespectful. Have you ever seen the All Blacks use the Haka in such a manner. No! If you are going to do the Haka then please use it appropriately.

Part of understanding the true meaning of "Kia Kaha" is that to be strong one has to be humble. Without humility there is no Kia Kaha.

HR still recruiting in NZ for this season?

My contact in New Zealand informs me that HR is still actively trying to recruit 2 more players from CCNZ or Hamilton , even though it is well into the season. Is this correct and why? Is three import players not enough?

A positive conversation

Jenny .......I will start by answering your question.

Remember I do not have any say in the policies of the United Rugby club. This blog contains my opinions and yes at times my brothers and I disagree. Also keep in mind that all the rules have now been changed for U-19 clubs, now allowing a max of 5 import players.

United has three import players this year. For almost one year I have been asking Highland to agree to the self imposed limit of two import players on the field at any one time. As you know this is not agreeable to HR. If HR agreed I believe United would follow suit.

HR may have 3,4,5 or 6 again this year. No one really knows because it has always been very secretive.

Lets assume that the import players are of equal or similar skill level. United has 3 HR has (?). Now the local players on both teams can compete on an almost level playing field.

Why don't we see if HR would agree to a limit of 3 import players on the field at anyone time. This would absolutely level the playing field for everyone. Is this fair? Can you expect any team to not have import players now that the rules have been changed and particularly after years of being soundly beaten by HR with their regular stable of amazing players from New Zealand.

Cosmic forces, along with committed coaches parents and players have a way of leveling the playing field. Competitiveness has returned to Utah high school aged rugby and it is a positive note for everyone.
